BIOGRAPHY
Matěj Číp is a young cimbalom player originally from the small village of Hodslavice in the north of Moravia. Led by leading Czech cimbalom educators, Číp deepened his passion for playing the cimbalom from the age of eight. Initially, he studied at the elementary art school of Alfréd Radok under professor Růžena Děcká and later at the Janáček Conservatory in Ostrava under the guidance of concert cimbalist Daniel Skála. The cimbalom, a unique instrument typical for Eastern and Central Europe, became Číp's key to the world and many opportunities. His talent and diligence brought him a first prize at the International Cimbalom Performing Arts Competition in 2017 and a diploma with the Summa Cum Laude distinction with a minor in the Chinese language at Northern State University, where he became the first-ever college student of the cimbalom in the United States.
In 2021, Číp went to study at the prestigious Central Conservatory in Beijing, China. His studies, facilitated by an invitation from the leading professor of the Chinese cimbalom yangqin, Liu Yuening, led to breakthrough experiences and concerts that allowed Číp to collaborate the cimbalom with traditional Chinese instruments. The highlight of his studies in China was the opportunity to present the cimbalom at the Winter Olympics in Beijing in 2022. With a wide musical range that includes genres from classical music, folklore to modern musical tendencies, Číp believes in the enormous potential of the cimbalom and strives to share it with an international audience.
New York currently belongs to the latest chapters in Číp's adventure. He was accepted to the famous Berklee College of Music - BerkleeNYC, where he was accepted for studies in Live Music Production and Design thanks to the cimbalom. His studies and travels are possible thanks to the generous support of the Bakala Foundation, BADOKH, Akademie Alternativa, Vitreus, Kousek po Kousku, and the LR Šmidberský Foundation from Pardubice. Číp also managed to create a successful crowdfunding campaign, in which he raised a portion of the financial resources for his studies through the Czech platform Hithit.
Číp's main mission in the United States involves presenting the concert form of the cimbalom across the United States. At the university, he managed to successfully collaborate with many different musical bodies and musicians, thanks to which he is constantly expanding his musical horizons. Číp regularly organizes concerts and lectures to bring the cimbalom closer to the American and global audience. He has managed to guest with American orchestras or lecture about the cimbalom at several prestigious American universities. Now based in New York, Číp looks forward to the opportunity to expand his artistic skills and establish new collaborations in one of the liveliest and most multicultural centers of the world, from where he is immensely grateful for every opportunity to travel home and around the world. Last but not least, Číp shares his musical endeavors on social media, where he performs under the nickname "Cimbalom Guy."
